In the case of finite group G, the symmetries of G gauge theories in 2 spacetime dimensions can be obtained using fusion categories and "higher representation-theoretic" methods. However, gauge theories that appear in physics make use of Lie group symmetry. In this talk, I will give a dictionary between gauge theory and category theory, and show how the fusion-categorical approach to gauge theory can be extended to recover the symmetries of gauge theories in arbitrary dimension, whose gauge group is given by an algebraic group.
