Ilmanen conjectured that the genus of a mean curvature flow (MCF) in R^3 strictly decreases after a singularity, unless the singularity is a cylinder or a sphere. This conjecture has gained recent revived attention as many new tools in MCFs become available. We will survey some recent progress of the conjecture and provide examples of MCFs where the genus of the flow disappears. This accompanies a recent work of Shao and Zhou where the genus halves after the singularity. This is joint work with Jacob Bernstein and Daniel Ketover.
