We follow N. J. Hitchin's celebrated paper (Proc. London Math. Soc. (3) 55 (1987) 59-126) to present foundational results regarding Higgs bundles on compact Riemann surfaces. This includes discussing fundamental topics such as Hitchin equation and stability of Higgs bundles, among others.
